Lenten Flame

Last night I connected with my inner Caveman as we made a fire in our
little church. We wrote our Lent confessions, protests and
commitments on pieces of paper and burnt them in a bowl. We used the
ash from the bowl to mark our foreheads; as a sign of mourning and
repentance.

An image that has stuck with me is the idea of our Lenten fast as a
small flame.

The tiniest flame sets the whole heart ablaze.

So our fast might be something so small as the resolution to change
our attitude. To pray a certain prayer daily. To have half a spoon
less sugar in our first cup of coffee of the day.

This small flame, as insignificant as it may seem - with God's help -
ignites a larger fire...
